The new building has provided and, when complete, will provide more improved and additional facilities for Babington House to serve students and staff well into the 21st century.
Phases I and II have already given us:
- Improved Reception classrooms
- A self-contained series of class rooms for the Junior Department enhancing the profile of that department
- 2 state of the art science laboratories for the Junior and Senior departments
- A new meeting space, Central Hall: used for assemblies, meetings and exhibitions
- A new Nursery facility with its own play area
- A lift to assist disabled and movement impaired students and others
The opening of Phase II in September 2007 enabled 2 ageing buildings to be removed and in their place we constructed a building designed to be in sympathy with our listed Victorian building of which we are so proud. It also enabled improved car parking and a cycle parking to be provided facilitating our School Travel Plan developed in partnership with the London Borough of Bromley.
The final Phase offers the most exciting development so far. Planning permission and funding is in place and we aim to begin construction after School closes in July 2010. A fully worked out management programme will minimise disruption, just as we did for the construction of phases I and II. We aim to be in a position to open Phase III in September 2011.
When complete Phase III will offer:
- A new gymnasium/assembly hall/theatre space
- Drama studio
- Music studio
- Restaurant to provide hot and cold meals
- Showers and changing rooms
- Another new space, this time open air: an amphitheatre in which open air performances can take place and soirees following our theatrical performances. This is, perhaps, the most exciting aspect of Phase III – a contemplative space for students and staff alike.
We are considering planting a roof garden above the restaurant to extend further the learning opportunities available to students.
Phase III will complete the refurbishment of the School’s facilities and offer existing and future students a learning environment which provides even more opportunities to cater for the needs of each individual and promote active learning and individual success.
